Boating in Louisiana - Bayous, Bays & the Gulf

Louisiana boating requires a mindset shift from most other states because a significant portion of the most productive water here isn't accessible from traditional concrete ramps. Bayou country, marsh fishing, and the coastal zone all have their own access infrastructure ranging from boat launches cut into the marsh edge to developed ramps serving the Intracoastal Waterway.
The Mississippi River runs through the heart of the state and is serious river navigation with commercial barge traffic, strong current, and access points scattered through a complex flood control infrastructure. Most recreational boating on the river is done by experienced boaters who know the water.
Lake Pontchartrain north of New Orleans is large, shallow, and subject to quick wind chops that can make it uncomfortable in smaller boats. The causeway divides the lake and local knowledge about which side is calmer under what wind conditions is worth having. Tidal influence keeps the lake brackish, and fishing there is primarily for speckled trout and redfish rather than freshwater species.
The Atchafalaya Basin is one of the largest river swamps in North America and has boat launch access from several highway crossings. Navigation in the Basin is by local knowledge or GPS, preferably both. It's easy to get turned around in the cypress-lined backwaters if you don't know the water.
Coastal Louisiana offers outstanding inshore fishing for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. The ramp infrastructure along the coast varies from excellent to informal, and conditions after storm seasons can affect what's usable.
Mosquitoes and heat from June through September are not minor inconveniences in Louisiana. Plan accordingly.
