Boating in Massachusetts - Sound, Canal & Open Coast

Massachusetts boating covers a range of environments from the sheltered waters of Buzzards Bay and Nantucket Sound on the south coast to the more exposed Cape Ann and North Shore on the north. Boston Harbor sits in the middle of it all and has gone through a remarkable water quality recovery over the past 30 years, making it significantly more usable than its historical reputation would suggest.
Cape Cod Canal is one of the busiest waterways in New England and connects the south-facing coast to the north, saving boaters the trip around Provincetown. The current in the Canal runs strong and in one direction at a time, so timing your transit with the current rather than against it is practical advice rather than just nice to have.
