West Virginia Boating - Rivers, Gorges & Summersville

West Virginia is defined by its rivers more than its lakes, and that shapes the boating culture accordingly. The New River Gorge, now a national park, contains one of the best whitewater rivers in the eastern United States from Hinton to Fayetteville, though that's paddling and raft territory rather than powerboat country. The Gauley River below Summersville Dam is similarly famous for whitewater and has a dedicated following of serious paddlers.
Summersville Lake itself is a different story. The reservoir above the Gauley's famous rapids is one of the clearest lakes in the eastern United States with unusually clean water for an Appalachian reservoir. Scuba diving is popular there and the lake has public ramp access with good facilities. The lake is subject to low drawdown in fall to allow whitewater releases below the dam, which affects boating access seasonally.
The Ohio River on the state's western border provides flatwater access and has ramp facilities at several towns including Huntington and Point Pleasant. It's working river navigation with barge traffic and the usual requirements.
Beech Fork Lake, Burnsville Lake, Burnsville, East Lynn, and other Corps of Engineers reservoirs scattered across the state provide flatwater recreation, though most are modest in size and infrastructure compared to the major reservoirs in neighboring states.
West Virginia's mountainous terrain limits the development of large flat-water reservoirs and makes road access to remote river sections challenging. The state's best boating requires some willingness to explore and accept less developed infrastructure than you'd find in flatter states.
