What to Know Before Boating in Arkansas

Arkansas is seriously underrated as a boating state. It sits in a region where multiple major river systems converge, and the Corps of Engineers has built out a network of reservoirs that give boaters access to thousands of miles of shoreline. Bull Shoals, Table Rock, Beaver, Greers Ferry, DeGray, and Ouachita are all legitimate destinations with solid public ramp infrastructure.
The Arkansas River navigation channel cuts across the entire state from Fort Smith to the Mississippi, and barge traffic is real on that stretch. If you're launching anywhere on the main channel, stay alert and give the commercial traffic plenty of room. The river below Little Rock gets wide and the current can surprise you if you're not used to moving water.
Greers Ferry Lake in the Ozarks tends to be the clearest water in the state, which makes it popular for water sports and diving in addition to fishing. The ramps managed by the Corps there are well-maintained with good parking.
One practical note for Arkansas: the state has a lot of free public ramps scattered across smaller lakes and rivers that don't show up on the major directories. Local knowledge from a county extension office or bait shop will often point you to spots that aren't crowded and have perfectly serviceable launches.
