Connecticut Boating - Sound, Rivers & Inland Lakes

Connecticut is a small state with a lot of water access packed into it. Long Island Sound defines the southern border and provides saltwater boating that's reasonably protected compared to open ocean, though conditions can still build quickly when wind and tide work against each other. The Sound is heavily trafficked in summer with recreational boats, commercial vessels, and ferry traffic, so situational awareness matters.
The Connecticut River runs the length of the state from the Massachusetts border to Old Saybrook where it meets the Sound. The lower river is navigable by fairly large vessels and has ramp access at several points. It's scenic water and less crowded than the Sound's most popular areas.
Inland, the state has a collection of lakes and ponds that support freshwater boating, though many have horsepower restrictions or are limited to electric motors. Candlewood Lake in the western part of the state is the largest and has multiple ramp access points with reasonable infrastructure.
Connecticut's boat registration and ramp regulations are consistent with other northeastern states, and most ramps run by the DEEP (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) are free to use with a valid registration. Parking can be a real constraint at popular Sound access points on summer weekends, so arriving early is genuinely necessary, not just advisable.
