Georgia's boating breaks cleanly into two very different experiences depending on which part of the state you're in. North Georgia is dominated by Corps of Engineers reservoirs in the Blue Ridge foothills, with lakes like Lanier, Allatoona, and Hartwell offering highland lake boating with steep shorelines, clear-ish water, and solid federal ramp infrastructure. South Georgia opens up into the coastal plain where the rivers slow down, the water darkens with tannins, and you're eventually dealing with tidal marshes and the Atlantic coast.
Lake Lanier north of Atlanta is the most-visited Corps lake in the country in terms of annual visitors, which tells you everything about weekend congestion. The ramps are well-maintained because they have to be, but plan for significant crowds from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekday boating at Lanier is a completely different and better experience.
Lake Hartwell on the Georgia-South Carolina line is large and less congested than Lanier despite being a significant fishery. The bass fishing there has a strong local following and the Corps ramps are generally in good condition.
The Okefenokee region in the southeast is swamp rather than lake, and while there's boat access, it's flat-bottomed and canoe territory more than recreational boating country. The coastal areas around Brunswick and St. Simons have saltwater ramp access and good inshore fishing for redfish and speckled trout.
Georgia requires boater education for operators born after January 1, 1998, and law enforcement on the major reservoirs is active, especially on holiday weekends.
