Idaho Boating - Rivers, Lakes & Mountain Water

Idaho's boating identity is split between whitewater rivers and mountain lakes, with a side of reservoir fishing that doesn't get nearly as much national attention as it deserves. The Snake River system runs across the southern part of the state and includes everything from Class V whitewater to wide, slow reservoir stretches behind the series of dams from Twin Falls to the Oregon border.
Lake Coeur d'Alene in the northern panhandle is probably Idaho's most recognizable boating destination. The lake is legitimately beautiful with clear water, forested shorelines, and a long season for this far north. The city ramps and state access points are well-developed, and the lake attracts serious water sports activity alongside the fishing crowd.
Priest Lake, further north, is quieter and has a more wilderness feel. Pend Oreille is enormous and deep, and has ramp access at several points with excellent fishing for lake trout and bull trout.
The Boise area has reservoir boating at Lucky Peak and Arrowrock that serves the local population well, though both can have variable water levels depending on irrigation demands.
One thing Idaho does that not every state does consistently: aquatic invasive species inspections are mandatory and enforced at most popular launch sites. The inspection stations can add wait time on busy summer weekends, so factor that in. The program exists because quagga and zebra mussels would be catastrophic in Idaho's water systems, and the state takes it seriously.
