Kansas is a landlocked state with serious wind, and those two facts define the boating experience here more than anything else. The reservoirs are large and open with almost no shoreline protection from prevailing southwest winds, so conditions can go from calm to choppy to legitimately rough faster than you'd expect from a freshwater lake in the middle of the country.
Milford Reservoir near Junction City is the largest in the state and has decent Corps ramp infrastructure. Cheney Reservoir southwest of Wichita is the primary water supply for Wichita and has boating access with some restrictions tied to its municipal water source status. Tuttle Creek, Clinton, Perry, and John Redmond reservoirs round out the major options.
The fishing in Kansas reservoirs is genuinely underrated. Wipers (hybrid striped bass) grow large in several of the major impoundments, and the walleye fishing at Milford has a solid regional reputation.
Water clarity in Kansas reservoirs is highly variable. After significant rainfall the water can turn quite turbid and stay that way for a while. If you're planning a trip specifically for water sports that depend on visibility, it's worth checking recent conditions.
Fees at Kansas state park ramps require either a daily vehicle permit or an annual Kansas State Parks passport, so have that sorted before you arrive. The Corps of Engineers ramps at some locations are separate and have their own fee structure.
