Michigan Boating - Great Lakes and Inland Waters

Michigan has more coastline than any state except Alaska when you account for both peninsulas and the Great Lakes shoreline. Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Erie all border the state, and the inland lake system is among the most extensive in the country. The Great Lakes are not lake boating in any conventional sense. They behave like inland seas, generating ocean-quality wave conditions quickly when wind and weather cooperate. The Upper Peninsula has a more remote character, with excellent fishing on interior lakes and rivers but less developed ramp infrastructure in many areas. If you're exploring the UP by boat, self-sufficiency is more important than in the Lower Peninsula.
