Michigan has more coastline than any state except Alaska when you account for both peninsulas and the Great Lakes shoreline. Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Erie all border the state, and the inland lake system is among the most extensive in the country. If boating volume and access points are your metrics, Michigan belongs in any conversation about the top boating states.
The Great Lakes are not lake boating in any conventional sense. They behave like inland seas, generating ocean-quality wave conditions quickly when wind and weather cooperate. Lake Superior in particular is cold enough year-round that immersion is life-threatening in all seasons. Even Lake Michigan, which has the most recreational boating traffic of the Great Lakes, produces conditions that have claimed experienced boaters. Treat any Great Lakes trip with the same respect you'd give an offshore ocean run.
The inland lake system in northern Michigan around Traverse City, Petoskey, and Charlevoix is exceptional. Clear Lake, Torch Lake, and Elk Lake have water clarity that rivals Caribbean destinations, and the boating infrastructure there is well-developed with multiple public ramps on each major lake.
The Upper Peninsula has a more remote character, with excellent fishing on interior lakes and rivers but less developed ramp infrastructure in many areas. If you're exploring the UP by boat, self-sufficiency is more important than in the Lower Peninsula.
Michigan's registration requirements apply to all motorized watercraft, and boater education requirements continue to expand toward all operators. The DNR maintains an extensive system of public access sites across the state, most with adequate ramp and parking facilities.
