Minnesota has over 11,000 lakes, which is a number so large it stops feeling meaningful until you actually drive across the state and see water appearing constantly between the trees. The boating infrastructure to support all that water is correspondingly extensive, with the DNR maintaining public access on hundreds of lakes across all regions of the state.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in the northeast is the most famous water recreation area in the state, but it's by definition non-motorized and paddle-only in most of its area. If you're looking for motorized lake boating, the focus shifts to the central and west-central lake country around Brainerd, the Leech Lake area, Lake of the Woods, and Mille Lacs.
Mille Lacs is the state's most prominent walleye lake and has extensive public ramp access around its perimeter. The fishing is productive but weather on Mille Lacs is notorious for coming up fast, and the shallow lake becomes dangerous quickly in wind. Local boaters respect it and you should too.
Lake of the Woods on the Canadian border is enormous and technically complicated water with thousands of islands. Navigation requires good charts or a GPS unit loaded with lake data. The walleye and muskie fishing up there has a national reputation.
Minnesota's aquatic invasive species program is among the most rigorous in the country. Inspections at launch sites are required, launch permits are needed at many accesses, and the drain-your-boat, remove-all-vegetation rules are enforced. Plan extra time at the ramp on busy summer weekends.
