Missouri sits at the confluence of two of North America's greatest rivers - the Missouri and the Mississippi - and the state has significant river boating culture along both corridors. But for most recreational boaters, the Lake of the Ozarks is the gravitational center of Missouri boating, and it has been for generations.
Lake of the Ozarks is one of the most heavily boated lakes in the country per shoreline mile during summer weekends. The coves fill with houseboats, party barges, ski boats, and every other configuration of recreational vessel, and the main channel sees boat traffic that can feel almost urban. It's a great lake for the social experience of summer boating, but if you're looking for a quiet fishing trip on a Saturday in July, this isn't the place.
Table Rock Lake near Branson on the Arkansas border is the better option for clear water and less congestion, at least relative to the Ozarks. It's a gorgeous lake with good bass fishing and ramp access managed by the Corps.
The Current River and Jack's Fork in the Ozarks are float trip country rather than powerboat water, but they represent an important piece of Missouri's water recreation culture and draw significant canoe and kayak traffic in season.
Missouri's registration requirements are standard for the region, and the DNR manages public access across the state with reasonable ramp infrastructure at most major lakes.
