New Hampshire Boating - Winnipesaukee and Beyond

New Hampshire is New England lake country, and Lake Winnipesaukee is the anchor. Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the state and has multiple public ramp access points managed by the state, alongside private marina launches scattered around its extensive shoreline. The lake is big enough to generate real wave action in northwest winds, and afternoon conditions in summer can be bumpy for smaller boats. That said, it's well-suited to powerboats, pontoons, and water sports from late May through early October.
Squam Lake just north of Winnipesaukee was the filming location for On Golden Pond, and it retains that character. It's quieter than Winnipesaukee, has public access, and has restrictions in place to maintain its relatively natural shoreline.
Newfound Lake is considered by many the clearest lake in New Hampshire and perhaps in New England. It has a state beach and public boat access. The water temperature stays cold even in August, which keeps it popular for swimming but limits the extended-season boating that the southern lakes allow.
The Connecticut River on the western border of the state is navigable in several sections and provides flatwater access for canoes and smaller motorboats. The northern reaches of the river above Pittsburg are remote and more appropriate for paddle craft.
New Hampshire imposes a fee for state boat ramp use, handled through an annual ramp permit or day-use fee. The permit is available through NH Fish and Game and is worth getting if you're using state ramps more than a couple times in a season.
