New Jersey's boating geography is split between the coast and the inland waterways in a way that doesn't always get recognized. The Jersey Shore and the back bays behind the barrier islands, Barnegat Bay in particular, support an enormous recreational boating population. The bay is shallow and generally protected, which makes it accessible for smaller boats and jet skis, but it can get choppy quickly in afternoon wind. Tidal awareness is important on the bay as some areas become very shallow at low water.
The Atlantic coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May is open ocean boating and the conditions reflect that. The offshore fishing for tuna, mahi-mahi, and billfish is outstanding and draws boats from multiple states, but ocean conditions require proper vessel preparation and experience. The inlet navigation at Manasquan, Barnegat, and other points requires caution as the inlets can have breaking waves in easterly conditions.
The Delaware River on the western side of the state provides significant river boating access from the Delaware Water Gap south through Trenton and the heavily industrialized corridor near Philadelphia. Barge traffic and current are both factors on the main river.
Inland, New Jersey has several lakes that support local boating populations, including Lake Hopatcong in the northern part of the state, which is the largest lake in New Jersey and has public ramp access and a well-established recreational boating community.
New Jersey's registration and inspection requirements are active, and law enforcement on Barnegat Bay is consistent, particularly regarding wake zones near marinas and residential areas.
