Oklahoma has more man-made lake shoreline than any state in the country, which reflects the state's aggressive reservoir construction through the mid-20th century. Grand Lake O' the Cherokees, Lake Tenkiller, Fort Gibson Lake, Eufaula, and the string of reservoirs across the eastern part of the state collectively offer enormous public boating access with well-developed Corps of Engineers infrastructure at most major lakes.
Grand Lake is the social anchor of northeast Oklahoma boating, with a well-established marina community, extensive shoreline development, and a pattern of summer recreation that draws people from Tulsa and beyond. It can get crowded on major holiday weekends to the point where the traffic on the water rivals the traffic getting there.
Lake Tenkiller in the Cherokee Hills is the clearest lake in the state, substantially cleaner than the more turbid impoundments to the east. It's a popular scuba diving destination as well as a fishing lake, which gives you a sense of the water quality.
Eufaula in the southeastern part of the state is one of the largest reservoirs in the country by surface area and has ramp access scattered throughout its extensive shoreline. The largemouth bass fishing there has produced tournament records.
The Arkansas River Navigation System connects eastern Oklahoma to the Mississippi River system via the McClellan-Kerr waterway, which allows barge traffic from Catoosa near Tulsa all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Recreational boaters share sections of this waterway with commercial traffic.
Oklahoma's boating regulations are actively enforced, particularly on the major reservoirs during peak season.
