Pennsylvania's boating is split between the Lake Erie shoreline in the northwest corner, the major rivers running through the state, and a scattered collection of reservoirs and lakes in between.
Presque Isle Bay at Erie is the most developed freshwater boating harbor in the state, with protected water behind the Presque Isle peninsula giving boaters access to open Lake Erie without having to launch directly into the lake. The peninsula forms a natural breakwater and the bay inside is well-suited to smaller boats. Erie on the lake side of the peninsula is another matter - the same Great Lakes conditions that apply elsewhere on Erie apply here.
The Susquehanna River runs the length of the state from the New York border through to Maryland and has ramp access at multiple points, though it's more of a float trip and fishing river than powerboat water in most of its Pennsylvania length. The West Branch and the North Branch are similarly suited to smaller craft.
The Delaware River on the eastern border has ramp access and is used for both recreation and fishing throughout its Pennsylvania reach from the Water Gap south through the Philadelphia area. Delaware River conditions can include significant current during high water periods.
Raystown Lake in central Pennsylvania is the state's largest single lake and has excellent Corps of Engineers ramp infrastructure. It's a deep, relatively clear reservoir with good smallmouth bass fishing and less pressure than the lakes closer to the major metro areas.
The state park system manages access at multiple smaller lakes and reservoirs scattered across the state, most with adequate ramp and parking facilities.
