South Carolina's boating geography runs from the upstate reservoir country along the North Carolina and Georgia borders down through the Midlands lakes and on to the Low Country coast, where the barrier islands and tidal marsh system create a boating environment unlike anything in the inland portions of the state.
Lake Murray west of Columbia is the premier recreational boating lake in the state, a large Saluda River impoundment with extensive shoreline development and solid ramp infrastructure. The Intracoastal Waterway runs the length of the South Carolina coast and provides protected navigation for cruising boats making the run between the northeast and Florida. Tidal range along the coast is significant, particularly in the upper part of the state, and ramps that have water at high tide can be marginal at low tide.
