South Dakota's boating is concentrated on the Missouri River reservoir system and the Black Hills lakes, with a few natural lakes in the northeast corner of the state rounding things out.
The Missouri River in South Dakota flows through four major reservoirs created by the Pick-Sloan project dams: Lewis and Clark Lake (shared with Nebraska), Lake Francis Case, Lake Sharpe, and Lake Oahe. Oahe is the largest, stretching from Pierre north into North Dakota and forming one of the largest reservoirs in the country. The walleye fishing on Oahe has national recognition and draws anglers from multiple states. The reservoir is remote and the western shore in particular is undeveloped, which makes self-sufficiency important on any extended trip.
The Black Hills lakes, Pactola, Sheridan, and Stockade are smaller mountain lakes with good public access and a recreational atmosphere suited to family boating and trout fishing. These lakes fill up on summer weekends with people from Rapid City and the tourist crowds heading through the region.
The glacial lakes in the northeast, Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota border and Lake Poinsett among others, have public access and support a local boating community with more modest infrastructure than the Missouri River corridor.
Wind is a factor across most of South Dakota's open water, and the large Missouri River reservoirs have essentially no shelter from prevailing winds. Afternoon conditions can deteriorate quickly on Oahe. The boating season runs roughly May through September in most of the state.
