Virginia Boating - The Bay, the Rivers & Smith Mountain

Virginia's boating splits clearly between the coast and the inland reservoir system, with the Chesapeake Bay serving as the dominant coastal feature and a long list of state and federal reservoirs serving the interior.
The Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are extraordinary water. The James, York, Rappahannock, and Potomac rivers all provide miles of protected tidal boating that flows naturally into the main Bay. The Virginia portion of the Bay has excellent public ramp access at multiple points, from Hampton Roads in the south through the Northern Neck and up to the Maryland line. Striped bass, bluefish, and flounder fishing draws a significant portion of the boating traffic on the tidal waters.
The Elizabeth River corridor through Norfolk and Portsmouth is heavily industrialized but has ramp access and connects to the ICW and Hampton Roads. The approach to the open Bay from Hampton Roads passes through some of the heaviest naval traffic in the world, which is worth being aware of and is a genuinely interesting navigation environment.
Inland, Smith Mountain Lake in the Blue Ridge foothills is the premier recreational boating lake in Virginia with good ramp infrastructure and a well-established boating community. Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir) on the North Carolina border is enormous and has excellent striper fishing with solid Corps ramp facilities throughout.
Claytor Lake near Radford and Lake Anna in the Piedmont both serve their respective regional populations well. Lake Anna was created by Dominion Energy for nuclear plant cooling and is now a popular recreational lake with multiple access points.
Virginia requires boater education for operators born on or after July 1, 1972, one of the broader education requirements in the country.
