Wisconsin's lake count rivals Minnesota's, and the northern lake country from Wausau north through Eagle River, Minocqua, Hayward, and up to Lake Superior is one of the most lake-dense regions in North America. The DNR manages public boat access sites on an extraordinary number of lakes, and the network of connected lakes in some areas allows genuine multi-lake boat travel by water.
Lake Winnebago in the eastern part of the state is the largest inland lake entirely within Wisconsin and has multiple public ramp access points. It's a shallow, productive walleye lake that gets significant tournament traffic and is known for its winter sturgeon spearing season, which is a Wisconsin tradition unlike anything else in the country.
Green Bay at the northern end of Lake Michigan is shared with Michigan and Illinois boaters and provides the same Great Lakes considerations that apply across that system. The door County peninsula separating Green Bay from the main lake is scenic cruising territory with natural harbors and small island stops, though lake conditions can build quickly on the open Michigan side.
The Northwoods chain lakes around Eagle River and Minocqua have significant boating infrastructure that caters to a multi-generational tourist and cabin culture. Many of the lakes are connected, and traveling between them by water is a standard summer activity for people with lakefront properties in the region.
Wisconsin's aquatic invasive species regulations are taken seriously, with mandatory decontamination requirements and watercraft inspections at many popular access points. The state has been dealing with invasive species pressure for years and the regulatory framework reflects that experience.
