Boating in California - A State With Everything

California's boating geography covers so much ground that it almost needs to be discussed by region. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in the Central Valley is one of the most ramp-dense areas in the entire country, with hundreds of access points serving a huge local population of bass anglers and recreational boaters. The Delta is also a labyrinth, and if you're new to it, get a good chart or use navigation tools because getting turned around out there is genuinely easy.
Northern California's Trinity Lake, Shasta, and Lake Almanor offer excellent mountain lake boating with well-maintained federal ramps. Shasta in particular has extensive ramp infrastructure to handle the summer volume. Water levels have been volatile in recent drought years though, so check before making the drive from the Bay Area or Sacramento.
Southern California's situation is different. The reservoirs around LA and San Diego tend to have restricted access, permit requirements, and horsepower limits on some lakes. Lake Perris, Castaic, and Pyramid are popular but have rules worth reading in advance. Ocean launching in Southern California requires solid experience - the surf conditions at beach ramps can be serious and the Coast Guard does not respond kindly to preventable incidents.
San Francisco Bay has ramp access at multiple points but the tidal currents, wind, and shipping traffic make it intermediate-to-advanced water. Don't take the Bay lightly on your first trip.
Fees at California ramps tend to be higher than most states, and the launch permit and registration requirements are strictly enforced.
