Kentucky has more miles of navigable waterways than any state except Alaska, which is a fact that surprises a lot of people. The combination of the Ohio River along its northern border, the Tennessee and Cumberland river systems in the west, and the extensive reservoir system built out by both the Corps and TVA gives Kentucky a legitimate claim to being one of the best boating states in the country.
Lake Cumberland in the south-central part of the state is one of the larger reservoirs east of the Mississippi and has extensive marina and ramp infrastructure to match. Houseboating is popular there in a way you don't see at most lakes - full-size houseboats with multiple decks and living amenities are a common sight. Dale Hollow on the Tennessee border is smaller but has some of the clearest water in the region.
Land Between the Lakes, the national recreation area between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, offers a unique situation where two major reservoirs sit side by side separated by a narrow peninsula. Both have excellent public ramp access throughout, and the fishing on Kentucky Lake for crappie and bass is nationally recognized.
The Ohio River has multiple public ramp access points across the northern border of the state. It's navigable by large vessels and has barge traffic to match, especially near Cincinnati and Louisville.
Kentucky's boat registration and titling requirements are similar to neighboring states, and boater education is required for operators under 12.
