Boat Ramps in Maine

Maine has more coastline than California, which means saltwater boating access is extensive, but the conditions that come with that coast are serious. The Gulf of Maine is cold, the fog can be dense and persistent, and the tidal variation in the upper part of the state, particularly in Cobscook Bay and Passamaquoddy Bay, is among the highest on the Atlantic Coast of North America. Local knowledge and proper navigation tools are not optional here.
The summer season compresses the comfortable boating window to roughly June through early September, though local Maine boaters extend that considerably in either direction. Water temperatures remain cold enough that immersion is a survival situation year-round, and wearing a life jacket is a practical decision rather than just a legal one.
Inland, Maine has thousands of lakes and ponds that support significant freshwater boating. The Rangeley Lakes region, Moosehead Lake, and the Sebago Lake area all have public ramp access and draw both fishing and recreational boating crowds. Moosehead is one of the larger lakes in the eastern US and has a remote quality to it that many of the more developed lakes don't.
The lobster boat traffic in coastal Maine is extensive and those boats have right-of-way in working areas. Respect the gear, give trap lines and buoys a wide berth, and don't cut through active fishing areas. Lobstermen have been working those waters for generations and they notice when recreational boaters cause problems with their gear.
