Maine has more coastline than California, which means saltwater boating access is extensive, but the conditions that come with that coast are serious. The Gulf of Maine is cold, the fog can be dense and persistent, and the tidal variation in the upper part of the state, particularly in Cobscook Bay and Passamaquoddy Bay, is among the highest on the Atlantic Coast of North America.
