Mississippi has the river that bears its name on its western border, and the Mississippi River is a genuine presence in the state's boating scene even if most recreational activity happens on the inland reservoirs and the Gulf Coast. The Natchez Trace Parkway corridor and the river oxbow lakes that run along the Mississippi River floodplain offer unique flatwater boating in cypress-lined environments that feel nothing like a typical reservoir.
Ross Barnett Reservoir near Jackson is the state's premier recreational boating lake and has well-developed ramp infrastructure to handle the metro population's demand. It's a broad, relatively shallow lake that gets choppy in wind but is generally easy water for recreational boating and bass fishing.
Sardis, Enid, Grenada, and Arkabutla reservoirs in the northern part of the state form a cluster of Corps-managed lakes with solid public access. These lakes are consistent performers for crappie fishing, and the reservoir marinas tend to be good sources of local conditions information.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers saltwater access to the inshore bays, barrier islands, and the open Gulf. The terrain is flat and the water behind the barrier islands is generally protected, making it accessible for smaller boats than you'd need for open Gulf running. Pass Christian, Biloxi, and Pascagoula all have ramp access points.
Water quality in Mississippi's inland lakes and the Gulf can be affected by agricultural runoff and periodic algae events, particularly in late summer. Check state advisories before water-contact recreation.
