Ohio's boating is anchored by Lake Erie on its northern border, one of the Great Lakes and the shallowest of the five. That shallowness means Erie warms up faster than the other lakes, supports an extraordinary walleye fishery, and also means it can become dangerous quickly in wind. Erie builds waves faster than most Great Lakes boaters expect for a lake its size, and its reputation for sudden severe weather is well-earned. The western basin near Toledo and Put-in-Bay is the most popular area and has significant ramp infrastructure at multiple points.
Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline communities - Sandusky, Huron, Cleveland, Lorain, Ashtabula - all have launch facilities ranging from simple county ramps to full marina complexes. The Lake Erie Islands, particularly South Bass, Middle Bass, and Kelleys Island, attract a large recreational boating crowd in summer with ferry and private boat traffic creating busy navigable water between the islands and the mainland.
Inland, Ohio has a collection of reservoirs and state park lakes that serve the landlocked population of the central and southern parts of the state. Hoover Reservoir and Alum Creek near Columbus are heavily used. Grand Lake St. Marys in the northwest was historically the largest artificial lake in the country when it was built and still has public ramp access.
The Ohio River on the state's southern border has ramp access and is used for recreation and fishing, though it's working river with barge traffic and the usual requirements for experienced navigation.
