South Carolina Boating - Upstate Lakes to the Low Country

South Carolina's boating geography runs from the upstate reservoir country along the North Carolina and Georgia borders down through the Midlands lakes and on to the Low Country coast, where the barrier islands and tidal marsh system create a boating environment unlike anything in the inland portions of the state.
Lake Murray west of Columbia is the premier recreational boating lake in the state, a large Saluda River impoundment with extensive shoreline development and solid ramp infrastructure. It's a busy lake on summer weekends but well-suited to all types of recreational boating. Lake Hartwell on the Georgia border and Lake Keowee in the Upstate both have good access and a mix of fishing and recreational activity.
The coast is where South Carolina gets genuinely distinctive. The ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast, provides marsh and river boating in an environment that feels remote even though it's not far from Charleston. The tidal creeks behind the barrier islands from Hilton Head to Georgetown are excellent inshore fishing territory for redfish and speckled trout, and the ramp infrastructure serving this fishery is well-developed at most access points.
The Intracoastal Waterway runs the length of the South Carolina coast and provides protected navigation for cruising boats making the run between the northeast and Florida. Tidal range along the coast is significant, particularly in the upper part of the state, and ramps that have water at high tide can be marginal at low tide.
SC Department of Natural Resources manages public boating access statewide and most freshwater ramps are free with a valid registration.
