Utah's boating happens in a desert environment with mountain reservoirs, and the setting is consistently spectacular even when the facilities are modest. Lake Powell on the Arizona border is the most famous, a reservoir in canyon country with 2,000 miles of shoreline when it's at capacity. Like Lake Mead, Powell has experienced dramatic water level drops in recent drought years, and ramp access has been severely affected at various points with some ramps becoming unusable entirely as the water receded. Checking current water levels and available ramp access before planning a Powell trip is essential.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir on the Wyoming border in the northeast corner of the state is another canyon country lake with excellent trout fishing, particularly for lake trout. The NPS manages the reservoir and ramp infrastructure is in place at several access points.
Utah Lake near Provo is the largest natural freshwater lake in Utah and has public ramp access, though the lake is shallow and subject to significant algae problems in late summer that can close the lake to recreation periodically. Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs in the Heber Valley area serve the Salt Lake and Provo markets with cleaner water and good ramp facilities.
Altitude applies throughout Utah boating. Most of the reservoirs sit at elevations between 4,500 and 6,000 feet, and engine performance, sun intensity, and physical exertion are all affected accordingly. Sunscreen needs are underestimated by a lot of first-time desert lake visitors.
